Hey guys,
Here's a quick two-cents on what I think about Gulliver's Travels starring Kung Fu Panda, Jack Black! I actually saw this a while ago so some parts are a bit fuzzy lol. But as you might or might not know, it is based on a book by Jonathan Swift first published from way back in 1726.
Synopsis: Lemuel Gulliver is a mail room worker and has basically no hope of a better career than what he's got. He's got a crush on a travel journalist and is afraid to ask her out and after plagiarising some travel magazine, she got him to do an article on the Bermuda Triangle. He gets sucked into an invert whirlpool and ends up in Liliput, a land inhabited by people of miniature size. He starts lying about himself and life is good, but then turns sour and learns a valuable life lesson in the end.
Well basically the from the synopsis you'd probably think it is a run-of-the-mill story and indeed it is. I hadn't read the original story or more like I forgot the original story but the main interest for me in the movie is the small people and their small items. I certainly agree with the king of Liliput saying he has the best engineers in all the land seeing their ingenuity was able to overcome many obstacles and build many things.
I am particularly amused by the subtle jokes they throw at you. From boats called "Ship happens" to Gulliver making the General of Liliput claim to be the biggest lame ass in all the land. The movie certainly doesn't fall short to amuse the viewers. There are also many parodies from Guitar Heroes to Star Wars to Titanic. It it all brilliant fun.
All in all, I give Gulliver's Travels a 3/5. Don't get me wrong, this is a great movie to see for light-hearted humour. It just lacks so much in the storytelling and plot department that makes it feel less satisfying. I also saw it in 3D it wasn't that bad but there are better 3D effects elsewhere lol.
Thanks for reading peeps. :3
